Black Sesame Ice Cream

Hi Guys! It was Mama Chu’s birthday a couple days ago, so I made some black sesame ice cream to celebrate. For those of you who have never had black sesame-flavored things, I think the best way to describe it would be nutty?! It’s wonderful and delicious, so you should definitely give it a try! I also added a little flair to my waffle cones for presentation points :D

INGREDIENTS:

  • 1/2 cup coconut milk

  • 1 cup heavy cream

  • 1 tsp vanilla extract

  • 3 tbsp black sesame powder

  • 3 egg yolks

  • 1/4 cup sugar

  • waffles cones

  • 1/4 cup chocolate chips

  • 1/4 cup sprinkles

INSTRUCTIONS:

  1. Combine the coconut milk, heavy cream, vanilla extract, and black sesame powder in a sauce pan. Heat over medium-low heat for about 5 minutes, stirring for time to time.

  2. Whisk the egg yolks and sugar together until light in color.

  3. Pour the heated mixture into the egg yolk mixture slowly, making sure to whisk rapidly to prevent curdling. Pour the entire mixture back into the sauce pan and heat over medium heat. Once the mixture thickens and simmers, remove from heat and let cool. Place in refrigerator for 1-2 hours to allow the custard mixture to completely cool.

  4. Melt the chocolate in the microwave, mixing every 15-30 seconds to make sure the chocolate doesn’t burn.

  5. Dip the top of the cones into the chocolate. You may want to use a small spoon after a few cones to help coat the rest of the cones.

  6. Sprinkle with your choice of sprinkles. I used rainbow non pareils which are circular sprinkles.

  7. Place in cups or stands and put in fridge for a few minutes to allow the chocolate to cool and harden.

  8. Once your custard mixture is completely cool, take out your ice cream maker. (I have a Cuisinart Ice Cream maker that comes with a double-insulated freezer bowl that requires it to be frozen overnight, but each ice cream maker varies so make sure to read and follow directions specific to your machine.)

  9. Turn on your ice cream maker and pour in the custard mixture. Allow the machine to churn for 10-15 minutes (or however long your directions say). The mixture should look like soft serve when it’s finished. You can either enjoy on the spot as soft-serve or place it in a container and freeze for another day. Hope you guys like it!!
